How does cosmetic dentistry improve my smile?

An attractive smile features teeth that are bright, white, properly aligned and in good condition. However, many patients find that their smiles fall short of some or all of these standards. Whether your issue is congenital or has developed over time, cosmetic dentistry can help.

In some cases, the cosmetic dentistry intervention will address the root cause of the condition, such as teeth whitening removing and releasing stains in the enamel. In others, the treatment will conceal the flaw, in the way a porcelain veneer might hide a chip or crack in a tooth.

Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures

In order to determine which treatments will be most beneficial in your case, we first complete an assessment, which may include:

  • Visual inspection of your teeth and gums
  • Photos
  • Dental impressions
  • Discussion of the patient’s treatment goals
  • Digital x-rays (used rarely and only when absolutely necessary)

The information gathered at this assessment will determine your treatment plan. Based on the dentist’s findings, any of the following treatments may be recommended:

  • Teeth whitening
  • Veneers
  • Composite (tooth-colored fillings)
  • CEREC dental crowns, which are made of ceramic and available in a single treatment session
  • Dental bonding
  • Invisalign

Some patients may be satisfied with a single treatment, while others may need or desire a combination of the interventions listed above.

Why should I choose a holistic dentist for cosmetic dentistry?

A holistic dentist weighs a number of factors in preparing your personalized cosmetic dentistry treatment plan. At Kozlow and Rowell Dentistry, we are committed to providing care that considers the effects on your entire body, as well as your mental and emotional health.

We work diligently to minimize the negative effects in every part of treatment, from assessment to intervention. For example, we limit your exposure to radiation to the greatest extent possible. We also use minimally invasive techniques for optimal comfort and less disruption to your regular routine.

Additionally, our dentists have special certifications to provide certain cosmetic treatments. Specifically, we are SMART certified through the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, which gives us the expertise needed to safely remove and replace amalgam fillings.

FAQ’s

What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is a dental specialty that focuses on improving the smile’s aesthetics. The smile may not have an optimal appearance when teeth are stained or yellowed by age, or if they are not in good condition or not properly aligned. Cosmetic dentistry corrects such issues, using a variety of interventions to make the smile look as much like the ideal as possible.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is bonded on top of a biological tooth. Dental crowns may be used to restore the structure and appearance of a tooth that is damaged by extensive decay or due to some sort of trauma. CEREC dental crowns are made of ceramic materials that replicate the appearance of biological tooth enamel. Furthermore, CEREC crowns are created using an in-office milling unit, so the patient can be fitted with a crown in a single appointment.

What is a veneer?

Veneers are thin layers of porcelain shaped like the front surface of a tooth. Veneers are bonded to the tooth in order to hide various defects, including chips, cracks or stains. One of the most versatile tools available in cosmetic dentistry, veneers can also be used to make an undersized tooth look proportionate to its neighbors or to create the sense of a straighter appearance in a slightly crooked stretch of teeth. Veneers are customized to blend in with the rest of the patient’s smile in terms of shade and shape of the teeth. Veneers may also be used in combination with teeth whitening to improve on the color of the teeth if desired.

I have sensitive teeth, can I still whiten my teeth?

Some patients who undergo teeth whitening treatments complain of increased tooth sensitivity as a side effect of the treatment. This is particularly true in patients who have undergone multiple teeth whitening treatments. While pre-existing tooth sensitivity is of some concern, it doesn’t rule you out as a candidate for teeth whitening treatment. We will just be more aware of the need to include measures to prevent or reduce tooth sensitivity and incorporate those into the treatment plan.
