Good Dental Health Starts Early

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

We teach our children to learn by our good example. Taking care of teeth is easily demonstrated by allowing your children to witness you flossing daily and brushing at least twice per day. Seeking affordable dentistry for you and your family will allow adults and children alike to maintain healthy teeth and gums for life.

The question is often asked when is the best time for a child to see the dentist for the first time. That first exam should take place around age one, with a couple of important facts to remember:

  • Making an appointment with your dental provider during a time that you know your child is cranky is a mistake. A well-rested child that is not hungry makes the best patient.
  • The child’s first appointments are usually reserved for exams to make sure there are no problems developing. This is best because if the child’s first visit is due to dental decay or trauma to a tooth, subsequent dental visits will be difficult.
  • As soon as teeth come in, brushing your child’s teeth with a soft bristle brush and age appropriate tooth paste or gel is important. Not only are good habits developing, but you are keeping plaque from forming on your child’s teeth.

Other facts to remember when considering your child’s dental health are:

  • Avoid putting your child down for a nap or to bed at night with a bottle of milk or juice. If you want to give your baby a bottle at these times, water is the only appropriate beverage to give. Beverages that include sugar can stay in the mouth for hours creating a bacterial haven for plaque build-up.
  • All foods in moderation are OK, but limiting sugary snacks is essential to maintain good dental health.
  • Don’t be misguided into believing that your child’s baby teeth will be replaced by their permanent teeth so there is no need to care for their deciduous teeth. This belief could be very damaging as those first teeth are laying the groundwork for permanent teeth and need to stay healthy and strong.

As your child grows, making sure they are brushing and flossing correctly is important. Excellent dental health contributes to good overall physical health, so encouraging strong dental habits supported by seeing your dental provider for a professional cleaning and exam twice per year will benefit your child for life.

Healthy Dental Habits to Follow

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

affordable dentistry DallasMost people would not think twice about seeing their physician annually for a check-up to make sure they are maintaining a healthy body. It is just as important to see your dentist twice per year to make sure you are maintaining healthy teeth and gums. See how affordable dentistry in Dallas TX can help you keep your teeth healthy, which will ultimately help keep your body the same.

Studies have shown that many serious health problems related to the heart could be minimized by taking better care of our teeth. Patients who suffer from periodontal disease are more at risk for heart related maladies. Diabetics are more prone to gum disease, which could lead to heart disease.

The foods we eat and how we take care of our mouths all contribute to our oral health. Your dentist advises a diet rich in healthy fruits and vegetables, nutritious snacks and minimal sugary foods and beverages will contribute to maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

But there are many more things we can do. Brushing teeth twice daily with a fluoridated toothpaste or gel is a great start. Flossing daily will help get to the harmful bacteria that collects at the gum line which forms plaque. Using an electric toothbrush will offer a couple of benefits. In addition to the actual brushing action of an electric toothbrush, the pressure exerted toward the teeth and gums will actually help to keep you from brushing too hard.

Brushing too hard can lead to premature gum recession as well as possibly lead to the breakdown of the enamel that protects our teeth. Most electric toothbrushes have a built in timer, so using an electric toothbrush might actually encourage the user to brush the recommended two minutes twice per day. Electric toothbrushes are available for any budget, but if you don’t opt for an electric toothbrush, at least switch to a new toothbrush at least every three months.

In addition to healthy teeth and gums, good oral hygiene habits will lead to fresh breath, and maybe less dental decay, which will ultimately save you time and money.

But possibly the best thing we can do for our dental health, as well as our overall health, is to visit our dentist twice per year for a professional dental cleaning and exam. Just as you visit your doctor to make sure you are taking all the measures needed to keep your body healthy, dental visits are just as important for our overall good health.

Preventive Dentistry: Why It’s So Important

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Preventive dentistry is the most effective way to keep your teeth healthy. Unfortunately, it is also the part of dentistry most likely to be ignored or avoided by many people. We provide affordable dentistry in the Dallas area to be sure you can keep up with your regular appointments and ensure your teeth remain strong and healthy for many years to come.

The Importance of Regular Check-Ups

Some people avoid regular dental visits because they believe that everyday oral hygiene and care is enough to keep their teeth and gums healthy. However, your dentist is able to provide care that you cannot provide on your own, and is better able to interpret any signs that your teeth might be in need of additional treatment.

Most dentists provide a basic set of services during regular check-ups, including:

  • X-rays
  • Fluoride treatments
  • Check for gingivitis
  • Oral cancer screening
  • Thorough cleaning

These can all help detect problems early, before they develop into serious issues. Minor gum disease, for example, is fairly easy to treat. Advanced gum disease can require surgery to return your gums to a healthy state. Your dentist can also evaluate your everyday oral hygiene to determine if you need to modify your technique for better results.

Everyday Care

In addition to preventive dentistry at the dentist’s office, your everyday oral hygiene makes a big difference in the health of your teeth and gums. Brushing and flossing regularly greatly reduces your chances of suffering from tooth decay and gum disease. However, if you are not brushing and flossing properly, your everyday regimen might not be effective.

When you visit your dentist during your regular check-ups, you can ask for a demonstration of how you should properly brush and floss your teeth. This can be particularly helpful for young children who are just learning to brush their teeth on their own. It can also ensure that your oral hygiene habits remain effective in keeping your teeth and gums healthy for many years to come.
