When teeth are too large or there is not enough jaw space for teeth to come in straight, the need to extract one or more teeth may be needed prior to teeth straightening.
Your dentist will evaluate your qualifications for the program to best fit your needs. Invisalign clear aligners provide a means to straighten teeth with the following advantages over traditional methods:
- Aligners are clear making treatment virtually invisible.
- Aligners are removable. This means that there are no diet restrictions as aligners are taken out for meals and snacks.
- Easier dental maintenance. Simply remove the aligners to brush and floss daily. Semi-annual dental visits allow for a thorough cleaning to remove plaque build-up keeping dental decay under control.
- Since aligners require no metal brackets, braces or wires, soft mouth tissues no longer suffer from abrasions or broken wires poking cheeks, gums, or tongue.
Over time the aligners will gently shift teeth to their correct position. If teeth have been extracted, the space created will be filled allowing the overbite to be straightened.
To judge if you are qualified for Invisalign, your dentist will utilize photographs, dental impressions, and x-rays. The Invisalign lab will take those same aids and with the assistance of 3-D digital technology, a series of aligners will be fabricated that will be replaced every couple of weeks throughout treatment to keep the straightening process moving forward.
Periodic dental visits will be needed to gauge progress. It is important to note that these visits do not take the place of needed visits with the hygienist to make sure plaque build-up is kept to a minimum in an effort to keep dental decay controlled throughout treatment.
Once the overbite has been corrected, the patient will be required to wear a retainer while the dental memory is entrenched. Failure to wear the retainer may result in teeth shifting back to their original position.
The smile makeover will be completed and the malocclusion corrected at the conclusion of treatment with Invisalign clear aligners. To find out more about Invisalign orthodontic treatment, contact the office of Dr. Philip Kozlow and schedule your informative consultation today.
