There is a large percentage of our population who desires an approach to dentistry that is gentler and more preventive in nature than the standard conventional methods. These patients are interested in dentistry that focuses on healing the mouth as well as the rest of the body without the use of toxic restorative materials and chemicals.
That means opting for metal-free, mercury-free, BPA-free, and fluoride-free procedures with a greater emphasis on caring for the whole mouth and controlling infections in a manner that won’t harm the rest of the body.
As healthcare professionals, we couldn’t agree more, and we are pleased to offer our patients high quality dentistry from a holistic perspective. Holistic dentistry, also referred to as biological dentistry or alternative dentistry, considers the impact on the rest of the body when dental treatment is performed on the jaws, teeth, and gums.
Our healthcare and treatment philosophies are guided by the following principles:
We welcome the opportunity to partner with you as well as your other healthcare practitioners in order to improve your oral health and also your general well-being. For more information, please contact our office for an appointment today.
Holistic dentistry recognizes that our smiles are interconnected with the rest of the body and that oral health is a key component of overall health and can be influenced by other systemic issues in the body. As such, holistic dentistry considers the elements of the whole human body and how oral diseases and their treatments can have effects throughout the system.
When treatment is necessary, holistic dentistry focuses on biocompatible materials and avoids the use of materials that can be toxic to the body. Furthermore, holistic dentists also limit the use of x-rays to scenarios when they are truly necessary, using alternative decay detection methods whenever possible.
Holistic dentists use BPA-free composite resin materials rather than amalgam (metal mixtures) for fillings. Not only do composite fillings reduce the patient’s risk from exposure to potentially toxic metals, but they also produce a more aesthetically pleasing result, as composite fillings are tooth-colored and don’t detract from the smile.
Although the American Dental Association has deemed root canals to be a safe procedure, patients may still have concerns about some of the materials used in a conventional root canal or the prospect of developing systemic disease after treatment.
As an alternative to standard root canal therapy, we offer our patients a holistic option: ozone therapy. This treatment can be highly effective in reducing the presence of infection and inflammation. Ozone therapy can be used to address other inflammation associated with oral diseases, such as gum disease. In cases of an infected tooth, your holistic dentist may also determine that the best treatment plan for your circumstances is to extract the tooth and replace it with a dental implant. We will discuss all of the possible options with you so that you can make a fully informed treatment decision.
The composite resin fillings that we provide are the least toxic materials that can be used to treat tooth decay. They are made of glass or quartz in a resin medium and are free from all metals and other problematic substances like BPA. Not only do we use such non-toxic materials for fillings, but we use them for other restorations, such as dental crowns, as well.
