15 Apr Prevalence of Dental Phobias: How Sedation Dentistry Can Make You Comfortable
Dental phobias are not as uncommon as one might think. In fact, dental phobias and clinical-related anxiety afflicts many people of all ages and demographics throughout the United States. Moderate and severe dental phobias fall into a category of mental ailments called anxiety disorders, which are the second most common type of mental illness.
For some folks, sedation dentistry is a way to receive the oral healthcare they need and deserve without overwhelming and uncomfortable feelings of panic and anxiety. If you have dental phobias or anxiety related to clinical settings, we recommend that you discuss your concerns with our caring dentist to determine if sedation dentistry is right for you.
Types of Sedation Dentistry
There are a few types of sedation available. Sedation dentistry commonly involves the use of nitrous oxide gas, orally administered medication, or intravenous medication. Nitrous oxide is a mild and safe way to help patients feel relaxed and comfortable. This gas produces warm, euphoric feelings, which have an analgesic and anxiolytic effect.
Oral and intravenous medications are stronger and are reserved for patients who have very pronounced anxiety or require lengthy, complex treatment. If oral sedation is used, benzodiazepines are normally prescribed. This family of medication is developed specifically for preventing anxiety and overwhelming feelings of worry or panic. Common medications from the benzodiazepine family include Klonopin and Ativan.
Intravenous (IV) sedation places patients in a dream-like state. The medication is delivered through an IV and usually consists of a combination of pain medication and a sedative to promote comfort and relaxation. IV sedation is administered in a highly controlled environment using only FDA approved medications and protocols. Since the medication is delivered through an IV, our team can control and adjust dosage as needed.
Our patients who have received sedation dentistry services have overwhelmingly reported positive experiences. We strive to make dental care accessible to everyone – including those with dental fears and phobias.
