Dental crowns are a common restoration that is used to strengthen teeth while also providing protection against future damage. These restorations are custom made to fit between teeth and over a damaged tooth so that oral function is restored as well as one’s appearance.

What are dental crowns?
A dental crown is a custom restoration that is made by technicians in dental laboratories. Unlike a filling, a crown covers an entire tooth. Essentially a tooth-shaped cap, a crown can hold a broken tooth together, restore visible signs of wear and tear, and protect against future damage or disease. To prepare a tooth for a crown, the tooth is slightly reduced in size and diameter to accommodate the crown, which will ultimately fit over it. Crowns are permanently bonded over teeth.
Can dental crowns look natural?
Many types of materials can be used to fabricate a crown. Some common options include metal alloys like gold and silver, zirconium, porcelain, and combinations of porcelain fused over metal materials. Porcelain and porcelain fused to metal crowns are the most natural option available. This is because porcelain closely resembles the color and texture of natural tooth structure.

Why would a person need a crown?
A patient could need a crown for many reasons. If one’s tooth is severely worn down, a crown may be used to restore its size and shape. For patients with deep cavities, a crown can be used to protect the tooth from future decay, infection, and damage. Crowns have cosmetic applications, too. They can make misshapen teeth appear healthy.
