What to Expect During Teeth Whitening Treatments

As you grow older, your teeth age with you. Years of eating and drinking, and in some cases smoking, antibiotics, or even too much fluoride, can begin to take its toll on our teeth, staining and discoloration of your no-longer pearly whites.

The answer to this is teeth whitening. Here at Kozlow and Rowell, we use Zoom!, a procedure that is long-lasting, safe, and effective, with low sensitivity rates. So if you want to have your teeth whitened, here’s what to expect.

During the treatment of teeth whitening, we use Zoom! to bleach the discoloration of the enamel and dentin. The whitening gel contains hydrogen peroxide, which is broken down, while oxygen infiltrates the enamel and dentin. The Zoom! light helps activate the gel to enter the tooth’s surface.

The procedure is quick and convenient, taking less than an hour. The bleaching takes around 45 minutes, with a short preparation time to clean the teeth.

Is the Procedure Painful?

While the process of teeth whitening isn’t painful, some patients may feel a little uncomfortable if they suffer from anxiety or have trouble with their gag reflex. Most patients are able to sit comfortably and listen to music, read a book, or watch television.

During the treatment, there may be some teeth sensitivity, as the light produces a very small amount of heat. Anti-sensitivity toothpaste can be administered before the treatment if you’re concerned about any sensitivity.

Is Teeth Whitening Treatment Safe?

Kozlow and Rowell use Zoom! for teeth whitening because it’s a procedure that has undergone extensive research and studies and has been proven to be safe to use. However, patients under 13, those who may be pregnant or are breastfeeding, are advised not to receive this treatment.

How Long Will My Teeth Stay White?

After the teeth whitening procedure, your dentist will give you some instructions to take care of your teeth, which will help them stay lighter and brighter. The best way to do this is by maintaining a healthy oral routine, brushing your teeth twice a day, and flossing. Patients may sometimes need a touch-up every so often to keep their teeth sparkling white.
