03 Jun How Dental Ozone is Used To Fight Disease in Holistic Dentistry
Our holistic dentist utilizes dental ozone (O3) in a number of treatments as a natural disinfectant and debridement tool. Ozone, a natural occurring compound, can kill everything from viruses and parasites to fungus and bacteria. In some cases, ozone is more effective than antibiotics taken in capsule or topical form. Following are some answers to common questions about dental ozone and how it might benefit our patients.
What is dental ozone exactly?
Dental ozone, or O3, is a gaseous compound, which is released into areas of the mouth where disinfection is needed. Since O3 can kill harmful bacteria, it is ideal for treatment of hard and soft tissues in the mouth.
Ozone essentially binds to the cellular walls of harmful pathogens. Helpful bacteria is not affected by ozone because it has chemicals that can convert ozone into oxygen. Since harmful pathogens lack chemicals to do this, ozone acts as an anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal agent.
When is O3 used?
Our holistic dentist may use ozone for the treatment of tooth decay, periodontal disease, fungal infections, and for treating oral sores. Ozone makes for an effective, non-surgical tool for the treatment of periodontal disease as it kills the pathogens that infect gingival tissue. Since periodontal disease infects the deepest parts of gum tissue, ozone is used to clean between deep periodontal pockets and open sores within the gums.
O3 may be used to clean a tooth prior to the placement of a filling or crown to ensure that cavity-causing bacteria is no longer present on or inside tooth structure. Ozone gas can flush out and disinfect infected root canals as well.
Another common application of dental ozone therapy is for treating sores on the lips or within the oral cavity, including fever blisters.
Is ozone treatment invasive?
Dental ozone treatment itself is not invasive. To apply ozone to the teeth or gums, a generator is used. This generator creates ozone by feeding oxygen through a tube where it is later charged with electricity to separate atoms and create the O3 compound.
