08 Feb Helping Little Smiles In Our Community
Dental care isn’t just for adults, it starts in childhood! We love the opportunity to help kids gain a better understanding of their smiles, and enjoy good oral health too. Which is why we’re proud to offer pediatric dentistry. At our holistic dental office in North Dallas, we can provide care for children of all ages!
Checkups and Cleanings for Kids
Just like you, kids need to undergo routine checkups too. The first visit is recommended within six months of the first baby tooth’s eruption. Starting at age two, kids need to undergo a checkup every six months. These visits allow us to monitor the smile as it grows and changes, and to identify areas of concern in the earliest stages, treating them before your kids develop painful symptoms or risk premature tooth loss. We can also instill good oral health habits and regular visits can prevent dental anxiety. In the same visit, we also take time to clean the smile, removing the plaque and tartar buildup that is linked to issues like cavities, bad breath, teeth stains, and gingivitis.
Fluoride and Dental Sealants
During the checkup visit, we could discuss applying fluoride directly to the teeth in a varnish form. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that has been shown to strengthen the weakened portions of enamel, fighting the onset of tooth decay. In addition, we could apply dental sealants to the rear teeth, as kids often have trouble reaching the molars when brushing and flossing, leaving these teeth vulnerable to tooth decay. Sealants are an acrylic coating that covers these teeth so food and drink particles can’t become stuck on or between them, limiting the risk of cavities. Sealants can stay in place for up to ten years in some cases!
Better Homecare Habits
As we touched on briefly above, we also want to take time to talk to your little ones about their smiles, and the importance of good oral hygiene habits. We want to discuss proper brushing and flossing habits to limit cavities from occurring, and to also discuss healthy snack options to cut back on sugary. These habits can follow them into adulthood, so your children continue to maintain good oral health and shining smiles for years to come!
