05 Aug Holistic Dental Hygiene Tips
Do you want to care for your oral health as naturally as possible? Your oral hygiene practices along with what you eat and drink can help protect your teeth and prevent the development of destructive dental diseases. In addition to keeping regular appointments with our holistic dentist, consider the following dental hygiene tips.
Floss Properly Every Day
Flossing on a regular basis can have a big effect on your oral health. Forgoing flossing will substantially raise your risks for developing gum disease – a condition that can literally destroy your health in its advanced stages.
You should floss every single day, preferably at night before you go to sleep. Be sure to take your time flossing between your teeth. Thorough and methodical flossing is most effective at removing tartar deposits and other debris between teeth and at the gum line.
Drink Plenty of Water
Drinking adequate amounts of water is on most health-conscious people’s minds. Although most of us know that our bodies need copious amounts of water, many of us might not know how drinking water can benefit our oral health. Water helps rinse our mouths after eating and it dilutes harmful acids that weaken teeth.
We recommend drinking at least 64-ounces of clear water each day.
Brush Twice a Day
Brushing our teeth helps remove surface debris that contributes to conditions like cavities and periodontal disease. Be sure to brush twice a day for about two minutes each time. This will adequately clean all surfaces of your teeth and soft oral tissue. In addition to cleaning your teeth, you should also brush your tongue, along your gums, and the roof of your mouth.
Avoid Acidic and Sugary Foods/Drinks
What we eat and drink affects our health, including the health of our teeth and gums. Sugary foods feed the bacteria in our mouths that cause disease while acid destroys our tooth enamel. Limiting intake of sugary and acidic drinks/foods can help reduce our risks for oral health conditions and protect our teeth and gums.
Try to eat a balanced diet with plenty of low-fat proteins, leafy greens, and colorful vegetables.
